# cadetMode

*Command · Difficulty · Arma 3 v0.50 · introduced in Operation Flashpoint v1.00*

## Description

**Prior to Arma 3** it returns if the player is currently playing in cadet or veteran mode.

## Syntax

```sqf
cadetMode
```

**Returns:** [Boolean](../topics/Boolean.md) - true when playing in cadet mode, false when playing in veteran mode

## Examples

### Example 1

SQS Syntax:

```sqs
? (cadetMode) : _AIsoldier setSkill 0.1
```

### Example 2

[SQF Syntax](../topics/SQF_Syntax.md):

```sqf
if (cadetMode) then { _AIsoldier setSkill 0.1 };
```

## Problems

> [!NOTE]
> This command returns the status of the global difficulty `showCadetHints`.
>
> Use `difficulty in [0, 1]` to achieve the **original intended** functionality!

## Community notes

**Killswitch** — 2009-12-01

In Arma 2, this command will return true if the difficulty level is set to "Recruit" or "Regular". It returns false for the "Veteran" and "Expert" difficulty levels.
